When kidney function begins to deteriorate—whether in the early stages or during chronic kidney disease (CKD) before dialysis—choosing the right foods and beverages becomes critically important. The kidneys are responsible for eliminating waste and toxins and regulating the balance of minerals such as sodium, potassium, phosphorus, and water in the body.

If you consume the wrong types of foods, waste can accumulate in the blood, leading to complications and faster kidney deterioration.

🔴 Foods and Drinks to Avoid When Kidney Function Declines

1. High-sodium foods
Examples: Processed foods, instant noodles, bouillon cubes, fish sauce, soy sauce, pickled items
Why: Excess sodium strains the kidneys, raises blood pressure, and leads to fluid retention
Tip: Limit sodium to no more than 2,000 mg per day (approx. 1 teaspoon)


2. High-potassium foods

3. High-phosphorus foods

Why: Excess phosphorus can reduce calcium in bones, increasing the risk of osteoporosis

4. Excess protein intake

Why: Kidneys must filter waste from protein metabolism; too much protein can accelerate kidney damage

5. Sugar and trans fats

Examples: White bread, baked goods, fried foods, sugary drinks

Why: Can cause blood sugar spikes and raise the risk of diabetes—a major cause of kidney damage

Tip: Choose natural sugars from fresh fruit and avoid greasy, processed foods


6. Coffee, energy drinks, and alcohol

Why: These stimulate excessive urination, causing loss of fluids and electrolytes, overburdening the kidneys

Tip: Drink plain water as your primary beverage, or opt for non-caffeinated herbal teas


Basic Guidelines: Support Your Kidneys Through Better Food Choices

  • Choose freshly cooked meals over processed foods

  • Drink 6–8 glasses of clean water per day (unless advised otherwise by your doctor)

  • Focus on lean protein sources like fish, tofu, or egg whites instead of fatty meats

  • Get your kidney function tested every 3–6 months to fine-tune your diet accordingly
